Kato Polyclay: Created by an Artist, for Artists!

K1_E2_KatoKato Polyclay actually has three basic forms: the bar clay, the liquid medium and paste.

Kato Polyclay is an easy-to-use polymer clay that bakes in about 10 minutes (or more depending on the thickness) to become a hard, durable material. I developed it to be stronger than other clays – objects made with Kato Polyclay become permanent works of art that will resist breaking and wear over time. Its versatile and smooth texture allows for detailed results for all types of work including figures, caning, jewelry, home décor, and model making. All colors in the line may be inter-mixed to produce any color or effect imaginable.

We sell Kato Polyclay and many other tools and supplies for polymer clay enthusiasts in our online shop, PrairieCraft.com!

Kato Polyclay: How It Came to Be

K1_E2_Kato

It was Vernon who suggested we do my clay. Of course, manufacturing a polymer clay is not an easy proposition. Plus, one would need a lot of equipment, and while I know what I like in a clay, I sure wouldn’t know how to formulate it.

In the years I worked in the trade, I was lucky to make friends. One of them was Robert Augur of Van Aken. He manufactured a clay, not a polymer, but a modeling material called Clayton Clay. This clay is used for clay animation – think Wallace and Grommet, and the like. We approached him with a modest proposal to do one specific clay and he said “let’s do it in colors!” You could have knocked me over with a feather.

Next thing we agreed to put my name on the package. You might not know how rare that is but let me say, it’s rare.

Tony Aquino and Robert set about formulating the clay based on my wish list. People sometimes think I’m some sort of chemical genius but no, I had the easy part, the chemical geniuses were Tony and Robert. Thank you, guys!
